WINOL- week 6

For my story this week, I spoke to a man on a bus who told me that his bins hadn't been collected, I took his details and asked him to meet me so that I could interview him about his problems; this went down well in the news meeting as I had managed to find a story from a source other than directly from the council or in a newspaper. The story was put into the headline of the bulletin which I was very happy about.

I think this is one of my better stories; I managed to get two interviews; one with the complaining resident and one with the leader of Winchester City Council who personally apologised. This is something I hadn't been able to do before as I have struggled to get two interviews, so I was very happy to get two considering  using statements were banned this week.

I gave a lot of effort and i think this shows in my package, I was persistent in trying to get an interview even though I was constantly refused one. This persistence paid off and it makes my package look so much better than reading a statement which isn't interesting at all. My shot selection was also better this week, although they are all mainly bins; I tried to vary the shots and use different techniques such as zooming in and out and pulling focus, which makes the piece a lot more interesting.

One bad point to this week's package was found in my last interview however; I have been told to be more forceful with my interviewees as one of them moves around a lot in the shot which moves him out of the correct framing which i had positioned. I now though it is best to stop the interview and start it again while politely asking the interviewee not to move. Another point was that during the interview the position of the sun moved from behind a cloud, directly onto the face of my interviewee meaning that it is hard to see him. I was disappointed with this, and really should have shot the interview again; something that I will do from now on.

We were reminded in the debrief that we must not say 'i interviewed' or i spoke to' or ' we went to' as the viewers do not care what we are up to, our packages do not need to be presenter led. They should be watched for the information and facts and not what the presenters are doing. This is something i did in my first package, ' i spoke to...' but since then i have remember to leave this out of my packages but also to avoid introducing the interviewee as this is what the strap line is for.

Overall i was happy with my package but there are still improvements to be made, this week is so much better than previous packages which I have now looked back on and see why they were not put into the bulletin or criticised. Although i am no expert yet, and there are still improvements to be made, I think that I can safely say my packages are improving. I also didn't have any technical problems with final cut pro this week which makes me feel that my knowledge of this programme is also constantly improving.
