This week i had a few different stories that i could have decided to use, however on Monday morning one of them fell through due to some confusion between the police's media department and the story that had already been released. Therefore i went with a story which i felt was not that interesting but would be a good local story involving a new hygiene rating system which would be used by Winchester City Council to rate restaurants, pubs, supermarkets and any other food outlets on a scale of 0-5.
The contacts that i have built up over the last few months meant that i was able to get an interview quickly for my story and also meant that i was able to film in an inspection in the council's own kitchen. This made my story much more interesting as i had relevant shots, i was also able to get hold of some relevant certificates and window stickers that will be used by shots, bringing in a piece to camera to make my story more relevant and interesting.
Everything was filmed on Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning so my story was complete by Tuesday afternoon and then meant that i could help out other members of the team to complete their stories.
I think this week went well as a whole, with most stories completed on time. I was given the advice to avoid repeating myself in my script however and to make it more conversational as some of the language i use is very formal and would make just as much sense with more conversational language. I was told that my shots were good and the piece itself was solid.
I think after November 30th there was a much more relaxed attitude and feeling about the news room, and although i don't think that we have mastered WINOL, live reporting has been an obvious benefit and our progression as a group and our ability increasing as individuals is obvious. There was a lot less stress around the news room, while i was particularly impressed with individuals packages and pieces to camera which i felt were very strong on a week when there was very little real news.
