This is my story for WINOL on Hampshire County Council's government grant to be used on expanding Primary school's in Hampshire. The story made it into the bulletin.
Hampshire county council grant story
Hampshire County Council is set to receive a government grant of £7.8 million pounds to be spent on expanding and developing Primary schools. The government selected 100 counties based on school capacity data and shared £500 million pounds between them, depending on their school capacities.
The grant is hoped to ease the pressure on the demand for primary school places due to an increasing birth rate. The council will spend the next few months deciding on where the money should be used most effectively and a decision should be made by December.
Executive member for Children’s services, Councillor Roy Perry has said that: “The announcement that Hampshire County Council will get £7.8 million to help alleviate pressure on school places is very welcome news. The money will be used where it is most needed to address increased demand for school places due to a rising birth rate.
“We will now be working to confirm the areas where these resources can be allocated most beneficially. I am particularly grateful to the Government for recognising that there are pressures on the shire counties in addition to the pressures on the inner cities. This money will be put to good use in Hampshire."
