Beginning of the second year- University of Winchester Journalism

The start of the second year is closing in after a long but productive summer. I have to say that I am really looking forward to getting back to writing, researching and learning! I have spent the summer working for a London building and maintenance company which I also enjoy, but it can be very hard work! The builders themselves are nice people, very funny and make the day enjoyable, but the work itself can also be enjoyable, I get a satisfaction out of seeing the start of a job and then the final product- usually in a better condition than when we started! A pay slip at the end of the week is also very satisfying! I've learnt a lot since I started the job three years ago and I feel that I could actually attempt some D.I.Y now!

But I am glad to be back in Winchester and getting myself ready for the second year which promises to be harder and more intense as I begin my role as the ' Finance and Consumer' reporter for WINOL. I also spent the summer learning about finance from several different government websites, my girlfriend's A- level notes from her finance class and many different library books! I felt that I needed some idea about the subject before beginning to report about it. I have also looked at potential stories for the next year and have begun researching them.  All in all I think that the summer has been very productive, I've juggled a job with journalism to make sure I am ready for the second year.

As for the first year, I really enjoyed the experience! At first I found 'The history and context of Journalism' very tough, but once I got my head around the subject and became better at Journalism in general as I learnt more about the laws, the things to do and the things to avoid, I started to really enjoy everything I was doing. The subject seemed daunting at the beginning but now I am looking forward to a career in the subject. Bring on year two!
