Match report- Charlton Athletic Vs Huddersfield Town

Promotion hunting Huddersfield Town condemned Charlton Athletic to a third consecutive season in league 1 with a 1-0 victory over Charlton Athletic at The Valley.

It is now mathematically impossible for Charlton to gain promotion to The Championship after the defeat which left them in the mid-table position of 13th, while Huddersfield continued their unbeaten run and ended the day in 3rd.

The game began even with possession shared evenly with a lack of clear cut chances for either side in the first half. Paul Benson worked tirelessly for Charlton; wininning arial challenge after arial challenge and constantly closed down the opposition. Huddersfield midfielder Kevin Kilbane had Huddersfield's best chance with a long range effort narrowly missing the top corner of Charlton's loan keeper John Sullivan.

The second half produced a more energetic display from both sides, with Charlton pressuring in front of the North stand. However despite close efforts from Wright-Phillips, Semedo, Solly, Stewart and Benson the chances went begging and were punished by a stunning Terriers goal.

Joey Gudjonsson took full advantage of a Jose Semedo foul to ensure that Huddersfield would take home all 3 points. The original free-kick struck the hands of Kyle Reid, who gave away the freekick for Gudjonssons fabulous goal on 83 minutes. Despite Charlton's pressure in the final minutes, Huddersfield held out for the victory which pushed them closer to automatic promotion.

Also in League 1 Brighton and Hove Albion backed up their promotion to The Championship on Tuesday with a 3-1 victory meaning that they are now champions of the division.

In other news Manchester City beat Manchester United by a goal to nil in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembely to reach the final. Yaya Toure scored the only goal and PAul Scholes saw red for a high challenge on Zaballetta in an entertaining Manchester derby.
