WINOL Week 3

This week's bulletin was a success and was definitely an improvement from the week before, despite many technical problems which hindered it, they were all eventually overcome. The bulletin had sound problems once it was exported despite these not being detected in the studio. Once these problems were detected something had to be done about it and therefore the bulletin was re-recorded in the newsroom so that the sound problems did not occur again. This did however mean that the bulletin was very late onto the site which did lose part of our audience.

Without an auto-cue the presenter did very well to remember the script and the busy newsroom presented a change to the boring and usual studio which we haven't changed in a very long time. It is worth considering whether it would be would be worth changing the layout and form of WINOL as it is exactly the same every week; maybe make the presenter stand up for headlines, or maybe not do the bulletin in the studio every week as the change to the newsroom was a noticeable improvement as it made for a more interesting shot. There are technical issues with producing a live bulletin out of the studio but it is something we need to look into.

We also had problems with the background of sport and news which were deleted from the studio and the way that packages came into the gallery; the size of them were wrong which meant that parts of interviews were cut off the screen. As well as this we relied heavily upon post production and the bulletin was once again recorded late. Despite all these issues I felt that the director in the gallery did very well and there was a sense of calm and one commanding voice this week compared to the shambles of last week. We didn't have people shouting and arguing and everyone did seem to know their role.

All these problems need to be sorted on a Tuesday morning so that Sportsweek can be filmed and then the bulletin can be filmed without delays to sort out issues with sizes, sounds problems, lighting issues and other issues which slow down the whole process of getting the bulletin recorded on time and then onto the website.
Because of issues like this our circulation needs boosting, not enough people know about WINOL and our circulation is continuing to drop. We now need to consider all options; such as adverts, billboards  posting the  latest bulletin on forums, competitions and posters around the uni and around town if possible.

Regarding the news itself there were two spelling mistakes in the straps which is very poor and cannot happen again, they need to be checked by the section editors and then the Editor to make sure they are right. It also seems that very few people are reading the local news websites as there was a lot of local news in the local papers that was missed or almost missed last week.

The use of the graphic in the house fire story which had very few graphics was very good and the HPCC story has a very good expo to start which maybe could have been shorter but used a good reveal shot, that would have been better if there had actually been something better to reveal than just empty seats. The car in one of the interviews of this story posses problems as a result of the number plate and anything that could be implied as a result of the position of this car. But this story also contained an interview with John Denham and two interviews facing opposite ways to change it up and make it look more visually interesting which is very good. There was also a very good walking and talking piece to camera and a back ano to the website.

The defibrillator story was very good because it was made interesting despite an obvious lack of shots. The technical of throwing the ball and using the change of colour and focus looked very good and worked very well. It was also very good to get relevant pictures that we did not have from Bolton Wanderers football club and there was a great piece to camera with the relevant equipment. There are great quotes in the interviews but one poor interview which is not framed well and possibly could have been left out.

Due to a problem with the opening line of the package of the uni story the sound does not sound right because it has been recorded in two different places. It turned out that the line itself that had been replaced was not actually incorrect and therefore could have been left in; if there are any queries like this then it is worth talking to the news editor so that they can make a decsion. The piece also starts with a covered up piece to camera which we have been told before is not a good way to start a package. There is also an interview in front of a wall and very few interesting shots; most are GV'. Finally the Toll bridge story was over exposed in one interview but there is a good range of shots and the vox pops are actually with drivers which is better than we have had before. The end line also pushes the story to the future which is very good.

The and finally interview was placed in front of a window which was banned the week before and in terms of shots they need to be closer in to make it look more professional. There was also poor sound which needs working on, and to make the package successful it needed a line at the end while the presenter was drinking the beer it was talking about.

All in all I felt that news improved a lot over the week and will continue to improve as the reporters gain experience and confidence.

Sport and Sportsweek were both very good; I presented sport but as a result of a broken light and the changing of position of lights it looks as though I am squinting; as well as this the editing of the sports part of the bulletin had technical issues which meant that the end line of sport was left out. Also the background for Sport had changed because it was deleted from the gallery meaning that I looked like a giant on the screen. Once again these are issues that need to be sorted before Wednesday. The sports packages however were very good as Sportsweek was presented from AFC Bournemouth's stadium which looked very professional  it would be worth considering filming all Sportsweeks on location as it provided a visually better show, as well as this with continued problems in the studio it would be better to get away from filming in the studio every week. The Bournemouth package itself was very good and it was brilliant to get access into a League 1 stadium. The packages themselves were very good and in the end we were spoiled for choice on which packages to choose from; scripting was good as were the shots and the use of different camera angles. Putting the package together will improve as confidence increases.

The new layout to the site is now live and makes it easier for people to find content but also for us to upload content on to the site. It also makes our website easier to view on more platforms and shows off our work in a new fashion. The news player will be on the front page on a Wednesday and this will be replaced with the features slider for the rest of the week which keeps the site looking fresh and new, incorporating video news, features and written articles which will now be updated on the weekends as well so that the site has a new fresh feel about it. The bulletin, sport and features are now all much easier to navigate, and a twitter feed on the right so our viewers can be up to date with what the reporters are up to during the day. There are also obvious links to our Facebook, twitter and you tube pages. We now also have a female section to the website which gives us both a male and female audience.
