WINOL Week 2 and BJTC awards

WINOL this week was mainly dedicated to the BJTC awards for the features and production team, with some help from the news and sports team. There has been very little time dedicated towards features so far as a result of the large focus on these awards, however the features board is full with ideas and the team will be putting full focus into making these ideas come to life over the weekend and at the start of next week.

The team worked extremely hard  to make sure that the BJTC awards were a success. Everyone made sure they knew what their roles were and made sure that they worked hard in rehearsals to avoid any mistakes. This showed on the day as there was no one error in the production side of the awards, the show looked professional for the audience watching but also looks amazing on camera. Everyone followed instruction perfectly and the host Alistair Stewart could not have presented any better.

We impressed our fellow students, our guests and other universities that were in attendance as well as making the University proud as well. The behind the scenes and package created for the bulletin both look extremely professional and the use of 5 different cameras meant that we have plenty of shots to chose from to make a good news and feature piece. Scripting was perfect, as was the seating plan and direction to ensure that there were no mistakes. The theatrical lighting and help we received from the technical team, and the packages clipped together by the producer all lead to a good show.

The behind the scenes team also worked very hard to make the behind the scenes video and photos which show our hard work. It was also nice to mingle and chat with our guests after the show itself. And it was also a success that Winchester students were also nominated for and received so many awards.

My personal role was fig rig operator which meant that I recorded the close up shots of each person winning their award. I think this was a success as we now have the ecstatic faces of each person as they win their sward. This adds to the show as we have the excitement and joy on the faces as they honestly did not believe that they had won their category. It was a hard job because we had to ensure that each person was sitting in the right place otherwise I would not have got the correct shot for each category  However this was made harder as a result of traffic problems which meant that some winners had to come in late and were not sitting in the correct places, their places were instead filled by members of the audience. So instead I kept a 2 shot where the winners and runners up were meant to be sitting and then focused on the winner as they got up to collect their award by zooming in on them. All in all I feel this was a success and something out of our control that we could not change.

For the news and sport team however there was the first WINOL of the term which I feel was a success. Everyone on the news team worked extremely hard despite the distraction of the BJTC Awards. It was a great effort from all of the news team to get stories together, and there were lots of them which is great for the news editor as it was always good to have stories which can go into the bulletin at any time. I felt that despite the bulletin missing the deadline of 3pm and going our slightly late it was still a great effort from the team for their first bulletin.

The production team also did well as they had to learn their roles and under the pressure of producing a live bulletin they did very well. It was put together very smoothly until the end where there were a few mistakes at the end to do with the end credits and a few scripting issues on the auto cue which can easily be eradicated. We need to make sure that we do not get to caught up with putting packages in post-production as it causes gaps in the rolling of vt's and causes confusion for all involved. We also need to ensure that there is enough time to rehearse so we are not just going out live without having practiced. And so that everyone is aware of what they are doing.

There was however too much talking in the gallery and we need to have silence with the director being commanding so that everyone knows what they are doing.  When everyone is speaking there is too much confusion; there needs to be one leading voice in the gallery to avoid mistakes and confusion. But all in all it was a good first effort from a new team that have never before seen a bulletin put together or a fully functioning team in the gallery.

For the pre-recording of the sports links and packages we need to make sure that we do not have a literal handing over from one presenter to the other as we do not want to con our audience  We need to make sure that we tell the audience that the sport was recorded before. This also helps in case a presenter is ill and needs to change, if the presenter was to change the literal link saying the presenters name would not make sense.

For the packages themselves; technically they had some very good points and some bad points that will almost certainly be improved and corrected in time as people begin to gain confidence become more aware of how to use the cameras. In the coming weeks we need to see more sequences that use different angels, and interviews that are more interesting like walking with the interviewee as the set up shot, or shots that aren't inside showing a white wall, or in front of a window. Instead they need to be interesting. Also interviewees should be warmed up before an interview and not sitting down. Get your interviewee to stand up.

We also need to have more close up shots because too many shots were filmed too far away and this looks unprofessional. The headlines also need improving to be more catchy and so that we can hear what each person is saying. In Sam Ashton it seems as though we have a good headline writer however. Links also need to be more interesting and not just stating the obvious who, what, where, when and why.

The BJTC awards package was very good with the use of fair dealing, superb pictures and very good scripting, all in all it was a very good package. The interviews were filmed well and the choice of shots used was very good. The voice over could have been improved however.

The Barton farm package was very good using a good drop intro. However regarding the scripting of 'the last poppy' it would have been better to say 'one of' to make sure that you are not wrong. There was a good set up shot walking with the interviewee.

The sex hotel story was very good, well filmed with a series of different shots and sequences, but there is a lack of natural sound and an interview in front of a brick wall which could have been put outside the house to make it more relevant and interesting. However the story had great access and will be a good story to do a follow up on in another bulletin.

The bottle bank story was shaking and a tripod needed to be used. A good sequences was attempted however, but the in and out shot was not very good. The interview was poorly framed and there was no rule of thirds. The shot was looking up rather than being eye level. The sound was poor and the levels were left on auto, but with experience and confidence this will all be improved.

All in all in was a good first bulletin to start the year.
