WINOL Week 1

Before the start of regular WINOL bulletins this year it is worth noting 3 important dates at the start of this year that are of great importance. Firstly, the BJTC awards that are to take place at The University of Winchester on October 9th, the Police Commissioner debate on the 1st of November and then finally on the 6th November the American Election which will take place overnight. These 3 'specials' are of great importance and enhances our reputation at Winchester and will take a great deal of planning, therefore for now regular versions of WINOL are to take a back seat.

My role for this year is Features Editor, after thoroughly enjoying last year as Sports Editor I am now relishing the my new role ad Features Editor, I feel like it will be a much bigger challenge this year as my knowledge of features is much less than that of sport or news. The first change to be made is getting rid of the old concept of the 'One show' like programme called WINOL life; it will be replaced by a new magazine which will be produced once a month, the first edition coming on the 7th November.

We are currently developing a new style to WINOL and its front page so that the interactive magazine is on one side and the news and a link to the bulletin is on the other. The new interactivity of the magazine and the site itself is something that we have never tried before and is therefore an exciting prospect for this year. The reason for dropping WINOL life was that the content produced for it has never been very strong and looked as though we were showing our work off to guests rather than actually producing the show with relevant guests that could be interviewed as part of the show. We thought that the online magazine would bring a fresh look to features this year, with better looking features that can be both written, video and interactive to move with the times and evolve ourselves.

The categories we chose were discussed in our first features meeting which was very successful. we came up with news, music, tech, comedy, style, Dr Fashion, food, confessional and feature interviews, photo essays. galleries and sports news. These categories will be filled with feature ideas every month in the form of both video and text. We will also include a Vanity Fair style piece on Winchesters most promising people with a different theme to that of last year.

With features it is worth noting that they are about what people think, presentation and the presenter is also important, pictures are essential, they have to be detailed, they are about seeing and not telling, they are aimed at niche groups and written to a precise lengths to fit to magazine or online publication.

Although the special editions of WINOL are being planned the features team will still be working hard as well to create these feature ideas by November 7th.
