This week's WINOL was once again a success, despite not having any major stories or big announcements we managed to create a solid bulletin without any major issues or problems. We even managed to get the bulletin out on time despite a fire alarm going off only 5 minutes before we were due to record. We showed calmness and a good attitude and a good amount of teamwork to get the bulletin out on time and without any issues with it.
However some of the things we could have improved on include making sure that we get the names of the people we interview; it is a simple thing but when it isn't done correctly it makes the piece look less reliable and as the case was with my story in Weymouth, I decided not to use an interview because I did not have the surname of the person I was interviewing. Also in the Weymouth package we should have moved around Weymouth so that we had different shots, we had a lot of long shots from one position but we didn't have any close ups or shots from different positions meaning that the piece didn't look as good. For some of the shots they needed to just be held in one place as well, rather than moving on or pulling out too quickly. As well as this, we needed to get in a boat to make the piece more gonzo and given us a greater range of action shots. Interviewing the sailors at The Sailing academy in Portland would also have looked good, giving the view of people who are actually involved in the sport. A different angle to take on this story would have been to use old clips of Weymouth and the tradition beach front with the new, future of the Olympics.
The bulletin did however have good headlines and a good washing line intro to one of the stories. As an overview this year we have spent too much time messing around with a new opening and I do think that content rather than the production of a different opening, and this could be the reason that we currently have less views than we did last year.
I think Sportsweek this week was okay, but could have been so much better. It was good to record Sportsweek from Weymouth, however two of the links did not work and when we found this out we were back in Winchester, which meant that we could not re-record them, meaning that we had to put two packages back to back which did not look good. As well as this the bulletin was shorter this week as we had a problem with one of the packages meaning that the video and sound would not go on together, as a result, the package could not be used.
After the bulletin we found out that there was some swearing on some of the natural sound which meant that we had to take the bulletin down as quickly as we could, losing views. I was disappointed that i did not hear it, but it was good that we heard it later and took it down as soon as possible.
