Reporting on the strike has now finished, I found it very enjoyable despite it terrifying me in the build up to it. I think the actual build up and anticipation was worse the the actual event itself. Apart form some technical difficulties that could not be helped I think the day all in all was a success. Watching back the highlights the quality of everyone's work seems very good and the camera work despite being live looks very good.
There were problems with sounds but that could not be helped but all the guests arrived and were interviewed, while the transportation of the studio to Southampton was successful and did not cause to many problems once everyone got their heads around who everything was going to work. The rehearsals and preparation before the even was a big help on the day.
I felt that my personal performance was very good as the Basingstoke team could only use a still camera as this was the only way we could think to be able to directly upload videos to you tube so that they could be used in Southampton. We made sure that all our videos were on time and of good quality. We managed to get interviews and show the before during and after the protest which all passed peacefully.
The only problem with everyone's reporting was that not much happened, however this was not our fault and we were still there to report on anything that did happen, meaning that our work was still good despite the news not being amazing. We managed to stay live for 4 hours which I think is a big success and shows how far we have come on as a group since the first bulletin at the beginning of the year. I know that i have grown in confidence and I think everyone else has to.
To be able to create a live broadcast like this i think there needed to be a large amount of team work, a lot of effort and also ability which I think everyone in the team showed in abundance. The fact that everyone produced content before and during the protests meant that we could stay on air for so long and the preparation meant that other unis and guests were available to help out.
Unfortunately in Basingstoke the protest ended early as it did in other locations but again this could not be helped and what we did report on was a big success. The presenting and work behind the scenes was all very good as was anyone who went in front of camera to report.
I think to improve we should all have more confidence in our ability because we showed that we can do these things, i think before the protests themselves fear was holding us back rather than our actual ability which shone through once we got into the swing of things. it was a shame that we couldn't use better quality cameras but due to not being able to get the cameras we wanted we had to use still cameras however these still worked just as well.
