WINOL- week 2

After the first week of WINOL, I was very much looking forward to creating a second package and correcting the mistakes I made last week. The story I chose was a feature piece which may be placed as an 'and finally' story if it makes it into the bulletin.  The story compares 3 different supermarkets in Winchester, looking at the prices of 6 typical student items; which as beans, pot noodles, basic cider and others. I was looking forward to creating this story as i felt it was one I could do well, and had been given advice and help on by lecturers and students.

I had to ensure that this week my filming was improved and my piece to camera was better than last week as it was a poor first attempt. I took my equipment down to the first shop; Iceland, where I set up my set up started to film. My filming was much better; the shots look a lot sharper, they are in focus, the white balance is correct and I am standing within the 'rule of thirds' rather than a mid shot. This time I made sure I knew my lines, and that I wasn't destracted by members of the public, which had put me off what i was saying in my piece to camera last week. I also made sure that i moved my hands and didn't stand still in the middle of the shot.

The biggest problem with this week's story was that I hadn't recieved permission in time to film inside the supermarkets, meaning that I could only film limited shots outside the shops such as the feet of people walking in and out of the shops, baskets and signs; not very interesting shots. I would have much rather filmed inside the shops, filming the actual products I was talking about in my expo. This is something I will have to work on; making sure that I get full permission for stories to be run before filming them.

I then went to the two remaining shots where I decided to use a radio microphone, allowing me to stand and move around more in the shots, meaning that i would feel and appear a lot less nervous. This was of great benefit to me and I think that my greater confidence this week meant that my package looks and feels more professional , with a lot less mistakes, sharper images and better pieces to camera. I took the advice of my lecturers and made sure that my explaining was not too long and got to the point of the story.

When I finished I came back to edit and benefited from constantly saving my work; something that I must remember to do, as the computer I was using shut down mid way through the editing process. This week's editing was also much smoother than last week's as I remembered how to log and capture, before editing which I found very simple last week. This saved me time and my experience with final cut pro is increasing with every time I use it.

I look forward to the coming together of this week's bulletin, with my package hopefully being included rather than being spiked.
